For the most part, I feel that clubs are dead-in-the-water if they are not providing some type of community service every year or sooner. Part of that service is the children in our communities, to provide an activity that could possible keep them from unlawful deeds and interest them in a great nationwide recreational sport, such as metal detecting. I promise you there is some work involved, but the reward is to see those young faces light up with excitement when they find their first coin with a metal detector.
Such will be the case in our community and state starting May 18th with the 1st Annual "HELPING HANDS TREASURE HUNT" at Tatum, Texas Lions Club Park starting at 8:00 AM. This is a all day event focused at the Scouts in the surrounding area outside the major cities. There will be a Hay Hunt for 6 years and younger, a Foreign Coin Hunt for the scouts and kids that attend(free of charge), a Hula Hoop Hunt open to all ($1.00 per throw), an Old Coin Hunt open to all ($10.00 per person), a drawing for a Garrett Metal Detector (proceeds go to the Lions Club and Scouts), and to end the day a Wrap Up Hunt ($2.00 per person)to clean the fields of buried coins. Everyone is welcome to attend and help teach these wonderful kids the fun of treasure hunting with a metal detector.Next will be our 9th Annual Hunt for the Handicap Children of the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, Texas. This will start on June 12th & 13th and we will be buring many foriegn coins donated from folks like you each year for these kids. We will be helping the handicap children (wheelchaired, blind and deaf)to use a metal detector for the first time to find treasure. Detectorist show up each year to support and help us with the children and YOU ARE INVITED to attend and help. We also teach the counslors, for they must keep the activity going through the summer with the children and the 12 detectors we have donated to the camp.
There are no words to discribe the wonderful excitement of these children when they experience metal detecting for the first time. This is also a lot of work, but it is the most rewarding work I have ever done. So if you have the chance to support or attend these two days, please do that, you'll be glad you did.
To all of you that have donated foreign coins, please know you are the cause of a very big smile on a beautiful child's face. We thank you with all our hearts for that! Keith
